This body of work marks a transformative chapter in my practice, emerging as a natural evolution from earlier narrative paintings. As I moved away from direct storytelling, I found myself drawn inward—toward the subconscious—and began cultivating a visual language rooted in intuition, memory, and instinct. The process felt primordial, as though I were tapping into a collective reservoir of imagery that existed beneath conscious thought.
The act of making became inseparable from the meaning of the work. I employed Surrealist techniques such as automatic drawing and decalcomania in the early stages, allowing forms and compositions to surface organically. This intuitive approach loosened the need for premeditated structure, making room for unexpected gestures and symbolic emergence.
Visually, the series is influenced by the ornate sensibilities of turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau and Art Deco painters like Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt. The decorative and the symbolic intertwine with more abstract, layered mark-making—an approach also informed by my teaching practice in Experimental Drawing. There, I explore techniques such as Simultanbild gesture drawing and pentimento, which emphasize accumulation, erasure, and the revelation of hidden forms.
